Evaluation for final product of my magazine

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Conventions

  2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents particular social groups by the use of different techniques I have used to fulfill the criteria. It is based on a dance/club magazine genre as I thought it would be a good hit for a wide range of audience for my particular age and older.

With this image, it took a long time to be able to produce such a dynamic image. For example, to construct my image of my magazine, I needed to know the basic facts such as which audience I was going to base it around, who would be involved with this particular magazine, clothing, make up, buying garments, location etc.

Make up/Hair

As you can see, I have bought and used UV light face paint on my female artist to represent particular social groups such as dance/DJ artists. Most clubs use UV face paint and as I have never done this before, I tried to challenge myself to be able to be different. The use of the paint on her face attracts the audience because with mainly a male audience, I have used an attractive 17 year old to be on the front cover as that will appeal to a wider audience by making them want to read the magazine to know who she is and why she is on the front cover. I have only used the face paint on her face just to show her face clearly to the audience and to focus on that part of her body.

For her hair, I have made it messy and straight to create the look of being at a club and enjoying herself which represents social groups. I have moved the fringe to create a better effect of the face when I took the photos of her so there would be no difference to not looking like she is in a club.

Location

As you can see in this picture, my location is in a green screen room and I have only changed the green cover into a black screen so then it gives the feel of a club with dark lighting and effects. I also used a red back light to get a view that the my model is dancing away and she is now able to use this as a guide for the feel of the music and the lighting gives the effect off from the UV light.

Direction

I have picked a few shots from my photos as it shows within the time I was shooting my photos, I took a range of different photos such as direction, different lighting etc. I thought I had to develop the direction of my shots because in a club you would not be stood still, you would be dancing and I was trying to get that vibe from taking "still" pictures.

Bought items
With making a dance magazine, I felt like I had to challenge myself instead of doing something boring and the same as everyone else. Making a dance magazine was the hardest thing to do because you had to get certain materials for the magazine to look right such as UV paint and a UV light.

The UV light worked well with the dance magazine because it brought an edge to the pictures and stood out which means that if my magazine was on the shelf in a supermarket store, then it would be able to stand out from the rest and take everyone's breath away. The UV paint only £1.00 for 5 UV paints which was a good bargain considering how challenging my magazine was going to be.

This is a real image of what I have took showing the brightness of the UV light. I bought this UV light on Ebay for £2.00 which was the best buy I could have got! It brings out the effects of the UV light which was only bought from a supermarket store and creates a good effect for all people to engage with when reading the magazine.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Whilst doing research, I discovered the distributor "Development Hell Ltd" which distributes MixMag who I based my magazine on. I felt like I had to email them to see if they were able to answer my 4 questions I asked them to get more information.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Reader Profile
Audience Profile

I also found my audience by doing a survey and emailing the survey to people for 2 days. The audience got back to me through the 2 days I sent the email. Using the survey was very successful as I was able to interact with my audience by telling me what they would like for the magazine I would be creating for them.

This example from using Survey Monkey, enabled me to find out certain aspects of my magazine which would be produced as the final product. As you can see, I asked 12 people whether they were male or female and there was more males than there was females. This made me realize that for a male magazine, it would somehow feature something that would appeal to a male audience on the front cover such as a female music artist.

In addition, I also asked the audience what ages they were as I would need a guideline of what content I would have to produce on the magazine. The highest percentage of age was 17-19 year olds at a percentage of 41.67%. This shows that the magazine would have to be quite informal but bright and catchy to get the audience reading my magazine and to benefit their needs.
As well as the gender and the age, I also found out the employment status of my audience as I felt like it was important to acknowledge this because I could then base my written content throughout my magazine to be applied to what employment status they were. 75% of the 12 people were students which I could then base my content on student applied catchments such as "free" goods.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Audience Feedback

I have interviewed one of my audience participants Eilish Gladwin asking her individual questions about what she thinks of my magazine. The questions I have chosen are:

1. Can you tell the genre of the magazine I have produced?
2. Does my front cover, contents page, and double page spread look conventional?
3. Do you think I have represented my audience through my design, if so how?
4. What has appealed to you the most?
5. What is a good factor about my magazine?
6. How do you think I can improve it?

These questions allowed me to understand if I did attract or address my audience and from the feedback I know that I have because I got positive feedback on my colour scheme and design. However I was told to improve on using more pictures throughout my magazine which is good advice and I will try to do that.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Photography

Mise-en-sccene

Throughout this year and doing the college task and the music magazine, I have learnt that I am not effectively able to use photoshop and develop my photos even more so that I can use a range of different techniques towards my magazines. I have learnt that through the year my media has enabled me to have the knowledge and research to keep improving my magazines.

What would you change?

In addition, I would also change my Genre completely may be to POP or classical because I think that would be a challenge and also I know a lot about because I surround myself with POP most days with my younger siblings and know most things about attracting the audience to younger people.

Changes Of My Final Products

CHANGES OF MY FINAL PRODUCTS

I keep doing different changes to my front cover as I think it will benefit by producing a higher grade than i have already got.

With the changes

Over consideration, I have decided to make a few alterations to make my front cover better. I have changed the font of my headlines from "Goudy stout" to "lithos pro" so it gives a feel of dance music vibe throughout the front cover so it is all the same. I have also changed "win a free cd" because I thought that was old and to have a free apple itunes voucher was more convenient seen as though many people do not own CD's anymore especially clubland music which people stream off the internet. I have also changed the headline from "Leeds fest" to "tomorrow land" because I didn't want the head line to be about a festival, I wanted it to be just about clubland music. Lastly for my front cover, I have changed the pull out quote from "My aim is to please my fans" to "Coming out of the dark" because she has a mysterious vibe coming from the picture I have taken and I thought it would be a good edge to the magazine.

As you can see, I have developed my contents page with a totally different picture as I thought the original picture was a bit boring for a clubland themed magazine. I have also changed the prize description on the bottom to have a feeling of what you could win instead of having a CD because not many 17-19 year olds listen to CD's anymore. As well as this, I have also added an orange band across the contents page across the top to have continuity from my front cover to the contents page. Lastly, I have changed the UV pictures on the bottom right hand corner to different artists called "Lawson" as I went to a concert and took these pictures and I thought they would be relevant for this magazine.

I have changed the DPS as the picture was quite plain and boring and doesn't scream out "club" so i thought I would produce a better picture. I have also decided to put a pull out quote in such as "Coming out of the dark!" which is featured on my front cover.

FRONT COVER

DPS

I am quite pleased with my final prduct of my DPS. I have changed it a lot from what I thought I would produce but I am happy with this and happy with the features.

CONTENTS

I am quite pleased at my contents page because it relates to my DPS page and it really stands out as well as my DPS.
